According to El Gol Digital, Liverpool are interested in signing Ezequiel Garay on a free transfer in the summer of 2021.

It has been reported by the Spanish news outlet that Liverpool are close to reaching an agreement with Garay.

The 34-year-old Argentine central defender has been without a club since the summer of 2020 when he left Valencia after injury problems.

Liverpool’s problems at the back this season have been well documented. Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are long-term injuries.

Van Dijk, Gomez and Matip are the three main central defenders in the Liverpool team.

Nathaniel Phillips and Rhys Williams have played for the Reds’ first team this season, and manager Jurgen Klopp also signed Ozan Kabak on loan from Schalke and Ben Davies from Preston North End in the January transfer window.

Even if Liverpool decide not to make Kabak’s loan deal permanent, the Reds will still be left with six centre-backs.

One could argue that Phillips, Williams and Davies are not ready to challenge Gomez and Matip to be the regular centre-back alongside Van Dijk.

In that case, it would make sense for Liverpool to bring in an established and quality centre-back who can compete with Gomez and Matip.

Garay is 34 years of age and has not played competitive football for months. Even if the Argentine centre-back keeps himself fit and has a good pre-season with Liverpool, it is hard to see him play week in and week out.

The former Real Madrid centre-back would be a short-term signing for Liverpool. There is no need for the defending Premier League champions to bring in a 34-year-old who has not played competitive football for months when they have other options.
