A round-up of the latest transfer gossip from around Europe as Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips gains further Premier League interest as Newcastle United back away.

The Magpies are in the market for midfield reinforcements this month. But Eddie Howe has seen his engine room take further blows and could struggle to strengthen given Newcastle’s tough financial position. The Toon are striving to stay within the Premier League’s FFP limits.

Monday saw the Premier League charge Everton for the second time and Nottingham Forest with breaking its profit and sustainability rules. The charges cover the three-year accounting period up to and including 2022/23. English top-flight clubs are allowed losses up to £105m.

Manchester City expect to finalise the transfer of River Plate midfielder Claudio Echeverri for £12m on January 25. The Daily Mail reports that the Citizens are waiting for the Argentinean market to open to finalise the switch. The 18-year-old will also remain at River Plate on loan.

The Daily Mail also adds that Manchester United sent scouts to Everton and Aston Villa’s 0-0 draw on Sunday to watch Jarrad Branthwaite. Old Trafford chiefs are keep to keep close tabs on the centre-half’s development. Sunday marked his 18th Premier League outing this term.

Additionally, the Daily Mail further adds that West Ham United will demand a fee to sell Ben Johnson in January. The Hammers have received enquiries from rival teams about a deal for the full-back. Leeds United, Rangers and Sheffield United are among the clubs with interest.

The Daily Mail also cites Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo as a transfer target for AC Milan and Inter Milan. The San Siro rivals have both expressed an interest in the 26-year-old who, like Johnson, is a free agent this summer. A move to Serie A would not be until the summer.

Newcastle remain unlikely to sign Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips on loan, despite news that Joelinton is now expected to miss the remainder of this season with a groin injury. The Telegraph notes that the Toon still feel the £7m the Citizens are demanding is too expensive.

The Daily Mail, meanwhile, reports that Phillips still has Premier League interest with Crystal Palace and Fulham among his suitors. While Paris Saint-Germain are monitoring Newcastle’s difficult finances with an eye on Bruno Guimaraes, who has a release clause worth £100m.

Agents have been approaching Manchester United prospect Dan Gore with the promise of a loan transfer away from Old Trafford. The Daily Mail reports that there is also an acceptance that he needs a temporary deal. So, the Red Devils will listen to offers for a short-term loan.

Chelsea will demand the full £35m value of Ian Maatsen’s release clause to sell the left-back this summer. The Telegraph notes that the Blues inserted the clause in the 21-year-old’s new contract through to June 2026 before he joined Borussia Dortmund on loan for a fee of £2m.

Red Star Belgrade are in talks with Aston Villa over an £8m transfer of Kosta Nedeljkovia, per the Daily Mail. But any deal for the Serbia U19 right-back is likely to see him stay at Red Star until the summer. Aston Villa are also likely to afford the Serbian squad a 15% sell-on clause.

Further reports by the Daily Mail note that Celtic are among an array of teams with interest in the transfer of Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. But the Reds are reluctant to sell the Ireland talent without a fair fee. Brentford, Brighton and Wolves have also scouted him lately.

The Daily Mail also notes that Liverpool have watched Sunderland goalie Anthony Patterson several times as a possible successor to Kelleher. But Anfield chiefs question if the 23-year-old is good enough to sign. He has eight clean sheets in 27 Championship games this term.

Boca Juniors have rejected approaches from Rangers, OGC Nice and Sevilla for the transfer of Luca Langoni. The Evening Standard reports that Boca intend to keep the 21-year-old in January. But the winger could yet leave the Argentine Primera Division side in the summer.

Matthijs de Ligt is not 100% happy at Bayern Munich and could pursue his transfer away this summer, per Florian Plettenberg. The 24-year-old is very popular at the Bundesliga team but is not a regular starter. Manchester United may also target a deal if Erik ten Hag is still there.
