Manchester United are looking to bring in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko to lead the line under Ruben Amorim next season.

It’s no shock that Ineos have made strengthening the attack a priority this summer after last season’s issues up front.

United managed just 44 goals in the Premier League during the 2024/25 campaign, and Jason Wilcox has since led a significant overhaul of the attacking options.

The club invested significantly in their attack this window, spending £65m on Bryan Mbeumo and £62.5m on Matheus Cunha. These two acquisitions fulfil two-thirds of United’s targeted offensive improvements.

With those two deals done, attention quickly turned to finding a new number nine, and Benjamin Sesko has emerged as their top choice.

Sesko is now United’s main target as we move into August, though negotiations are still at an early stage. Wilcox isn’t known for rushing deals, as seen with how long it took to land Mbeumo.

There are a few questions about whether bringing in Sesko makes sense given Rasmus Hojlund’s role, but the two players offer very different profiles and skill sets, so those comparisons don’t really hold up.

The club appear committed to going after Sesko, and despite the potential risks, a deal seems to be moving forward quickly. According to United in Focus transfer correspondent Graeme Bailey, there’s growing belief inside the club that they can get it done.

The mood around Old Trafford is positive. While no one is getting ahead of themselves just yet, there is clear satisfaction with how discussions have gone recently.

Bailey added that United have made their intentions clear during discussions with Sesko’s representatives.

“During their talks, Sesko confirmed that a lack of Champions League football this season was not a problem to him as the long-term project and the chance to work with Ruben Amorim were the major draws.

“I can also reveal that United made it clear to Sesko’s people that they are aware of the size of deal that would be required to land him and that they would not have entered into talks without that consideration.

“United are confident, there is no denying that but they are waiting – they also know that Newcastle have put forward a very strong case.”

Why the Red Devils should push for Sesko signing

United’s ability to afford Sesko at this stage is a positive sign, suggesting there’s still flexibility in the budget for Wilcox to work with.

But all signs right now point to the rest of those funds being directed towards a striker, with United clearly focused on boosting their goal output.

If Sesko is brought in, he’d join Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha as part of a completely revamped front three. That group has the potential to score 45 goals between them if things click as hoped.

The midfield doesn’t seem to be as pressing an issue this summer. Amorim has already started making adjustments, including switching to a diamond shape against Bournemouth to better support Casemiro.

While further moves could be funded by player sales, finishing off this attacking overhaul would go a long way towards reshaping United’s outlook for the 2025/26 campaign.
