Tottenham have been linked with Luiz Gustavo. We ask… really?

Another entry in the Transfer Bin – Where the most unlikely rumours are named and shamed, hopefully to never be heard again.

Not for the first time, it is a report from the Express which features – this time concerning Tottenham Hotspur.

They claim this afternoon that Spurs are showing an interest in Brazilian midfielder Luiz Gustavo.

Yes, that’s exactly what Tottenham Hotspur need – Another defensive midfielder.

Spurs are flush at the position, with Sandro and Etienne Capoue providing excellent cover in the position, while Paulinho and Moussa Dembele are versatile enough to also drop deep if required.

And those players are helping the club to keep one of the best defensive records in the Premier League, with one particular game an almighty blip which we won’t dwell on for supporters’ sakes.

Certainly there is no need for Tottenham to front up the £20 million release clause which would be required to free Gustavo from the Wolfsburg contract he signed just four months ago.

The report does add that any deal would be next summer rather than January – but it just makes little sense whatsoever for Spurs to be paying such a huge fee for a player they do not need.

That would be unless equally nonsensical rumours linked Capoue and Sandro both to Roma which have cropped up in the Italian press over the last month turn out to be true – but put it this way, we wouldn’t count on it.

There are positions where Spurs need to strengthen more – namely at left-back and up front, and that is where we would anticipate the club’s funds being diverted in the neat future.

Tottenham’s midfield has been criticised for being too defensive, even midfielder Dembele questioning the tactics – Adding another player to sit and hold, rather than attack – would solve nothing.

Rubbish rating: Grade A rubbish!
