Ekemini Ekerette has told Goal.com that reported Newcastle United target Odion Ighalo wants to be at Manchester United next season.

Ighalo is on loan at United from Shanghai Shenhua at the moment and is scheduled to return to the Chinese Super League club this summer.

According to Sky Sports, Newcastle are interested in signing the former Watford striker on a permanent contract if the proposed takeover by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund goes through.

The 30-year-old Nigerian’s personal trainer has praised the striker, and has said that he wants to be at United beyond this summer.

However, according to Goal.com, United do not want to sign Ighalo on a permanent contract this summer.

Ekerette told Goal.com: “He’s a team player and has been talking about [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial, [Mason] Greenwood, and how fantastic they all are, so he’s looking forward to hopefully getting to play with Rashford.

“He wants to stay and loves United, Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer] and the fans and he would love to be a Red for the rest of his life.”

Good signing for Newcastle United?

Ighalo has played 61 minutes in the Premier League, and has scored two goals and provided one assist in three Europa League games for United so far this season, according to WhoScored.

Football in England is suspended at the moment due to the global health crisis, and it remains to be seen when the summer transfer window opens and how much clubs are willing to spend on new players.

While Ighalo is a good striker, if Newcastle are looking to go to the next level after the proposed takeover, then they need to sign a better and more prolific player upfront.
