Trabzonspor are in talks to sign Leeds outcast Ekuban, after he was ostracised by Marcelo Bielsa.
Trabzonspor president Ahmet Agaoglu has told Turkish outlet Sabah that the club are in talks with Leeds United striker Caleb Ekuban this summer, after the forward was pictured landing in the country.
The 24-year-old failed to impress at Leeds last season, scoring just two goals in 21 games – being a prime example of Victor Orta’s poor transfer business that also included signings such as Felix Wiedwald and Pierre-Michel Lasogga.
Ekuban was not given a squad number by new manager Marcelo Bielsa this summer, along with the likes of Eunan O’Kane, with the Argentine making it clear he has no future at Elland Road.
With three days remaining in the window, Trabzonspor are in talks to land Ekuban and Agaoglu has claimed that signing the striker could materialise because he is a “low-cost option”.
“Since the beginning of the transfer season, almost 20 players have been interviewed, one of them is Ekuban,” Agaoglu said.
“Strikers Muhammet Bashir and Ramil Sheidaev left the team, leaving only after Burak Yilmaz and Hugo Rodallega up front. Ekuban is a low-cost player, so there is no definite situation at the moment, but negotiations are continuing.”
Talks seem to be progressing nicely, with former Chievo striker Ekuban spotted by newspaper Sporx who photographed the player touching down in a Turkish airport.
The signing of Patrick Bamford from Middlesbrough, as well as the improved form of Kemar Roofe and the impressive pre-season performances of Ryan Edmondson and Sam Dalby have pushed Ekuban down the pecking order.
It remains to be seen if a move for Ekuban will be a permanent one, or indeed a season-long loan.
