While Newcastle United fans are obviously hoping Rafa Benitez stays at the club, there’s a section of people who wouldn’t blame him for succeeding Julen Lopetegui at Spain.

The Magpies finished a very respectable 10th in the Premier League last season, much to the credit of Benitez, but throughout the campaign one got the feeling that all was not well behind the scenes.
The 58-year-old was frustrated with the lack of money at his disposal to bring in new players, and there was also the proposed takeover from Amanda Staveley that never went through. So speculation was rife about his future, particularly during the difficult moments towards the start of the season.
He is now just over two years deep into his Newcastle project and he has done a sterling job getting the club promoted back to the Premier League at the first time of asking, and finishing 10th last term.

Following the news that Julen Lopetegui will become the next manager of Real Madrid, the Daily Express has reported that Benitez is being ‘seriously considered’ as his successor.
At the moment, the former Liverpool and Chelsea boss looks like he won’t be getting an awful lot to spend this summer again at St. James’ Park, and so some Newcastle supporters are of the opinion that if Spain did indeed come calling, then they wouldn’t really be able to complain. Others, aren’t buying it.
