Everton have spent the past few seasons fielding Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams together in defence, and this surely can’t go on for much longer.

Everton may have finished eighth last season in the Premier League, but the team flattered to deceive all season and left fans unimpressed once the dust had settled.

As reported by the Northern Echo, Marco Silva is eyeing a move for Middlesbrough star Ben Gibson this summer, after realising Jamaal Lascelles of Newcastle is far too coveted by the Magpies.

On the market for a reported £20 million, Gibson would likely make for a great bit of business, with Everton crying out for a centre-half with some mobility. The Toffees secured a move for Michael Keane last summer from Burnley, but often Ronald Koeman and Sam Allardyce fielded him alongside the ageing pair of Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams.

In a league brimming with fast forwards, Everton were often left exposed last term. With the Northern Echo reporting that Boro are going to have to try and balance the books a little after shelling out £50 million last summer, Everton should be swoop to make this potential deal a priority.

Last term Gibson, who has previous Premier League experience of course, made 47 Championship appearances and played his part in getting the team to a playoff semi-final.

He was the subject of interest from Stoke City last season, but chairman and uncle Steve Gibson stood firm – but now could be the time, in the interest of all parties, for him to move on.
