Wayne Rooney is reportedly on the verge of completing a move to DC United – which could be excellent news for Gylfi Sigurdsson.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Wayne Rooney is on the verge of completing a move to DC United after weeks of negotiations.

The 32-year-old is set to sign a two-year deal with the Washington-based outfit, and will become the club’s star attraction in a new chapter for the player.

Rooney is turning his back on Goodison Park for the second time in his playing career, after Marco Silva opened the door for his exit following discussions about the role he would have next season, the Mail reports.

Wayne Rooney of Everton is substituted off during the Premier League match between Huddersfield Town and Everton at John Smith's Stadium on April 28, 2018 in Huddersfield, England.

The Manchester United legend, who spent 13 years at Old Trafford and won 16 trophies, is following in the footsteps of former England captains Steven Gerrard and David Beckham.

It can be argued that Rooney’s departure could be great news for Gylfi Sigurdsson, who failed to have the desired impact last season following his big money move from Swansea City.

Sigurdsson often found himself shifted out to the left in order to accomodate Rooney, which suppressed the Iceland international’s effectiveness considerably and allowed games to pass him by.

Sigurdsson’s best position is operating as the most advanced midfielder, and Rooney’s departure could be the catalyst for him to start justifying his £45 million price tag.

The 28-year-old is excellent at breaking the lines and is extremely dangerous when he has the space to shoot from distance. Everton fans could see more of those things from Sigurdsson if Marco Silva deploys him in the ‘Rooney role’.
