Raheem Sterling opened the scoring in the first half with a fine finish after being set up by Jordan Henderson’s superb long-range pass (hit with his weaker foot).
However, Dusan Tadic provided a brilliant pass of his own to set up Nathaniel Clyne as Southampton equalised in the second half. Then, the visitors pressed for a winner.
The Kop was tense as Liverpool pushed for a solution – and they found one as Sterling headed towards goal late on, with Sturridge on hand to tap the ball home with the deftest of touches.
Encouragingly for Liverpool fans, new £12 million signing Alberto Moreno was pictured watching from the stands, while Adam Lallana – bought for £25m – was also present to watch the Reds in action against his former side.
