Eden Hazard enjoyed a 90% dribble success rate against Burnley.
Cesc Fabregas may have stolen the show for Chelsea on Monday night – but it was another man who topped the Premier League charts with the ball at his feet.
Indeed, where Fabregas may have shone with his exquisite passing and set-piece deliveries, it was Eden Hazard who shone with his dribbling – yet again.
Is there a better dribbler out there than the Belgian? Based on the stats, it’s hard to find one.
| Team | Pos | Dribbles Won | Total Contest | Apps | Mins | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eden Hazard | Chelsea | MF | 9 | 10 | 1 | 84 |
| Santiago Cazorla | Arsenal | MF | 5 | 8 | 1 | 90 |
| Raheem Sterling | Liverpool | MF | 5 | 7 | 1 | 90 |
| Rémy Cabella | Newcastle | MF | 4 | 6 | 1 | 90 |
| Adnan Januzaj | Man Utd | MF | 4 | 8 | 1 | 66 |
| Victor Wanyama | Southampton | MF | 4 | 4 | 1 | 90 |
As Opta data shows, the 23-year-old won almost twice as many dribbles as any other player in the Premier League last weekend.
And what’s more, Hazard won 90% of the contests he attempted against Burnley. His nearest rival was Raheem Sterling, who, by comparison, completed just five out of seven – still better than anyone other than Hazard, however.
| Team | Pos | Dribbles Won | Apps | Mins | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Eden Hazard | Chelsea | FW | 132 | 35 | 2,895 |
| Luis Suarez | Liverpool | FW | 93 | 33 | 2,964 |
| Raheem Sterling | Liverpool | FW | 92 | 33 | 2,218 |
| Ross Barkley | Everton | MF | 80 | 34 | 2,286 |
| Yannick Bolasie | Crystal Palace | MF | 74 | 29 | 2,038 |
As stats from last season show, Hazard is simply continuing where he left off last term. With 132 won dribbles, the Chelsea winger was the only man to top a ton on the ball, with Luis Suarez being his nearest competitor.
So, while the Belgian may not have appeared as effective as the likes of Fabregas, Diego Costa or Andre Schurrle going forward, he was doing what he does best all the same.
In terms of a player better at beating his man in world football, we may have to look abroad…
| Team | Pos | Dribbles Won | Apps | Mins | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lionel Messi | Argentina | FW | 46 | 7 | 693 |
| Arjen Robben | Netherlands | MF | 34 | 7 | 690 |
| Ángel Di María | Argentina | MF | 25 | 5 | 422 |
| Alexis Sánchez | Chile | FW | 22 | 4 | 390 |
| Eden Hazard | Belgium | MF | 20 | 5 | 368 |
During the World Cup, for instance, four players won more dribbles than Hazard, although two of them played two more games.
But that was the 23-year-old playing for his national side. For Chelsea, he seems twice the player.
