Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has some big calls to make ahead of the League Cup final this weekend in terms of team selection.

The boss needs to go into the game with a team which is capable of piercing through the Chelsea defence in the same manner as the 5-3 win against the Blues in the Premier League.

One of his dilemmas is left midfield and the choice between the explosive pace of Andros Townsend or the greater all round ability of Nacer Chadli.

The case for starting Townsend

Townsend’s biggest asset is his pace, which can be useful on a big open pitch like the one at Wembley.

He’s also very experienced in terms of taking penalties in pressure situations, which will be important if the sides can’t be separated after normal and extra time.

In terms of his stats, he doesn’t really get close to Chadli in key areas but he is better in terms of crossing.

If Pochettino feels he needs an out and out winger to attack the full-back and get crosses into the box, Townsend is his man.

The case for starting Chadli

Chadli has been more prolific in terms of goals and assists this season, which can be explained by the fact he’s played more.

His passing accuracy is better and he has shown a greater ability to take on players and win dribble duels against opponents.

He’s the safe all round option to have towards the left-hand side.

Conclusion

The smart money is on Chadli. Townsend can always be brought into the game in the second half or in extra time as an impact player.
