Andy Townsend thinks that Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane is marshalled completely incorrectly by opposition teams, as per his comments on the Premier League Analysis Show, which is broadcast by Premier League productions.
Kane has made a wonderful start to the new campaign, where he has scored 13 goals and claimed 10 assists in 14 appearances for Tottenham.
Kane has dropped into the pocket more than ever this season, with Jose Mourinho wanting his leading marksman to play a more creative role.
The England captain has thrived under his new instructions, but Townsend cannot understand why opposition managers aren’t instructing their players to get closer to the Spurs forward.
“What surprises me is why teams allow him to drop into these areas,” Townsend said. “Other players are closely marked and attended to but Harry Kane does more than any of them.
“I think with Kane, because he’s a striker and he drops it’s the hole, it’s almost like ‘he can’t find that pass’. Which we know isn’t true.
“He doesn’t get enough attention when he drops into the hole.
“Opposing players seem to just give it up, to almost just allow him to make those passes.
“I think teams have to tighten up on Harry Kane.”
Tottenham’s system works well because when Kane drops deep, the likes of Heung-Min Son, Lucas Moura or Gareth Bale are always looking to spin in behind.
That can make the task for any defence very complicated, as it is difficult to know which of the Spurs front three to pay attention to.
Spurs’s attacking strength means that they have almost outscored every other team in the Premier League, and they have climbed into second spot at this early stage of the season.
