Should Newcastle United star Jonjo Shelvey be part of the England team at the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia in the summer?
While discussing the prospect of Shelvey of being part of the England national football team for the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia in the summer, former Chelsea midfielder Townsend said on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 live on Monday evening (8:24pm, April 9, 2018): “The only worry about Jonjo Shelvey, still a little bit, would be without the ball and doing something daft like grabbing someone, tripping someone up, pushing someone.”
World Cup spot
Shelvey, who earns £70,000 per week as salary at Newcastle according to The Daily Star, is in good form for the Magpies at the moment.
The 26-year-old midfielder has scored one goal and provided two assists in 19 Premier League starts for Newcastle so far this season.
The Magpies’ recent performances and positive results have been due to the former Liverpool and Charlton Athletic’s form. Shelvey is a brilliant passer of the ball who can pick a teammate with a stunning pass.
There will be doubts, though, on the temperament of the midfielder, who was sent off for treading on Tottenham Hotspur star Dele Alli back in August 2017.
The Newcastle midfielder has been shown the red card twice in the league this season, and that could play on the mind of England head coach Gareth Southgate, who will know that he cannot have a player sent off during a match at the World Cup.
