Kevin Campbell has suggested on Highbury Squad that Arsenal central defender Gabriel should be considered for the captain’s role in place of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
Arsenal have decided to strip Aubameyang off the captain’s role following his latest disciplinary breach.
Manager Mikel Arteta will now have to find a new captain for the team.
Former Arsenal striker Campbell has suggested Brazilian defender Gabriel as a candidate.
The Sky Sports pundit has suggested left-back Kieran Tierney as well.
Campbell said on Highbury Squad: “Could Gabriel grow to be that leader? Tough, strong. He is the figurehead.
“I think he could. Tierney could be that player as well, but obviously he needs to keep his fitness as well. Those two are the prime candidates.”

Gabriel to become Arsenal captain?
In our opinion, Arsenal manager Arteta should at least consider Gabriel as his new captain.
The Brazilian is a very good central defender and is a key figure in the team.
The 23-year-old, who cost Arsenal £27 million (Sky Sports), is one of the first names on the teamsheet when he is fit and available.
Gabriel plays well and is a leader at the back.
In our view, Campbell’s suggestion about Gabriel should be taken seriously by Arteta.
Yes, Gabriel is only 23, but he has been at Arsenal since the summer of 2020 and is already an important player.
There is no downside to at least considering Gabriel for the role now left vacant by Aubameyang.
