Tottenham star congratulates former club.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has expressed his congratulations for former club Atletico Madrid after their Europa League win.
Atletico beat Marseille 3-0 in the final last night, who had one of Alderweireld’s old Spurs teammates Clinton N’Jie come off the bench.
But there were more familiar faces in Atletico’s team for Alderweireld, plus manager Diego Simeone.
Alderweireld signed for Atletico in 2013 and still has plenty of admiration for his former club.
Alderweireld’s spell at Atletico was not particularly successful on an individual standpoint, but he did help them to a memorable La Liga win, despite only being a back-up and playing 12 league games.
He was loaned to Southampton a year later, before Tottenham swooped to sign him in 2015.
Now his spell at Spurs appears to be coming to an end, with the Evening Standard reporting he is expected to leave this summer amid interest from Manchester United after he was unable to agree a new contract in North London.
