Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld has told the London Evening Standard that his side proved their intent right from the first-minute of the North London derby.

Spurs won 2-1 against Arsenal yesterday, with Jose Mourinho’s side having nine shots on target over the 90 minutes.

Considering Spurs had only had five shots on goal in their previous three matches it was a marked improvement from Mourinho’s men.

And Alderweireld believes that Tottenham set out a marker in the opening seconds, when Heung-Min Son got a shot off from range.

“Sometimes you just need some momentum and confidence,” Alderweireld said.

“I think from minute one [against Arsenal], after a couple of seconds, we had a shot on goal. That showed what our intentions were.”

Tottenham’s victory over Arsenal has lifted what was a darkening mood around the club.

Mourinho’s side had not shown their true quality, but they were much improved in the derby contest.

Tottenham will now look to push on over the remainder of the season, with Mourinho stressing how important making it into the Europa League will be.

Spurs are currently in eighth place in the Premier League table, and will next be in action on Wednesday against Newcastle United.
