Tottenham forward Son Heung-min has spoken about his disappointment following South Korea’s failure to win a medal at the Olympics.

Son Heung-min is currently enjoying a great run of form for Tottenham Hotspur, which will be a huge relief to the forward as he was not sure about his club future earlier on in the summer.
It seems like he will be a regular feature in the first team for the foreseeable future, however as reported by The Guardian the South Korean has spoken about his heartbreak at being unable to win an Olympic medal with his national side at the 2016 Summer Olympics.
“After the Olympics I was very upset. I was really down, because I played for my country and I wanted to get some medals for my country. My heart was already in it for six months beforehand, but after the Olympics, I thought: ‘Now I have to focus on the season.’ It was not easy but everyone – my family, my teammates – helped me a lot, and they made me stronger than before.”

One of the reasons that Son was so upset is because if they had won a medal of any colour he would have been excused from completing his 21-month military service, which is mandatory in South Korea for males before they reach the age of 28. His hopes came to an end in the tournament when his country suffered a quarter-final loss at the hands of Honduras.
He still has the opportunity to gain immunity from doing the service, as a gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games with South Korea will also make him exempt. For now though, he will have to focus on helping Tottenham to a successful campaign.
