Tottenham Hotspur are determined to sell Alderweireld for the same price that Liverpool paid for Van Dijk six months ago.
According to a report from the Sun (print edition July 22nd, page 61), Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is not budging on his £75 million valuation of Toby Alderweireld, and if Spurs manage to sell the Belgian for that amount, it will make Liverpool’s signing of Virgil van Dijk seem all the more impressive.
The Reds brought the Holland international to Anfield from Southampton in January for a fee believed to be worth in the region of £75 million.
Considering the fact that Van Dijk, 27, is two-and-a-half years younger than Alderweireld, Liverpool have surely secured themselves real value for money.
The Dutchman is an outstanding defender, and it would be easy to argue a case for him being easily as good as his Tottenham counterpart.
If Levy is successful in garnering £75 million for Alderweireld’s signature, it would surely be seen as an absolute masterstroke by the Spurs chairman.
The 56-year-old has forged a well-earned reputation within the game as a hard-nosed businessman, and he will only enhance his reputation as a world class negotiator if he sells the Belgium international, who will be 30 in March, for £63 million more than he paid for him three years ago.
Van Dijk’s move from Southampton to Liverpool just serves as further evidence of how much of a good deal Tottenham could be on the verge of securing.
They still have to find a buyer for Alderweireld, of course, but they should have no problem in doing just that.
