Tottenham Hotspur reportedly want to give Ben Davies a new contract.
Tottenham Hotspur endured a dismal night against Inter Milan on Tuesday, with Mauricio Pochettino’s men throwing away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1.
The same thing happened at Watford in the Premier League last month, and fans are certainly concerned after three defeats in a row under Pochettino for the first time.
A number of players struggled to hit top form against Inter, as they have for much of the season, and left back Ben Davies was one such player.
The Welsh international was key for Pochettino last season, but has started this season poorly, and fans blasted his performance against Inter, both defensively and in possession.
The 25-year-old has been a fairly solid player since his 2014 move from Swansea City, but with Tottenham looking to move to the next level, Davies may be one player that needs to be left behind.
However, Football.London recently reported that Tottenham intend on giving Davies a new contract to reward him for his displays over the last year, and it’s hard to see such a move getting a great reception in North London.
Tottenham have been linked with left backs such as Ben Chilwell and Kieran Tierney in recent weeks, and those two would be ideal targets to become Pochettino’s new first-choice left back, with Davies so far looking out of place.
There is of course time for Davies to turn things around this season, but with his poor performances and exciting targets in his position linked, fans surely won’t be impressed if Spurs go and extend Davies’s stay in North London beyond 2021, when his current deal ends.
