Tottenham Hotspur ended what has been another brilliant Premier League season in 2016/17 with a 7-1 thrashing of Hull City on the final day.

Critics may argue that Spurs are yet to win a trophy under manager Mauricio Pochettino, but that is incredibly harsh and overlooks what an outstanding job the Argentine has done at White Hart Lane.

And these stats from 2016/17 prove it.

Top scorers

Thirteen goals from their last two outings certainly helped, but take nothing away from the fact that with 86 strikes no team in England’s top tier have scored more this term, with champions Chelsea one behind on 85.

Best defence

Unlike at Liverpool and Arsenal high-scoring hasn’t also meant a leaky defence, however, with Tottenham’s 26 conceded the lowest in the division (ahead of Manchester United, who let in three more and scored 32 fewer).

Huge points total

Spurs’ final points haul of 86 is the second highest total without winning the league, bettered only by Man United’s 89 from 2011/12 when a last-minute Sergio Aguero strike famously won it for Manchester City.

Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, that total would have been enough to win the title on ten occasions.

Goals and assists shared

Options may be limited in the striking department at Tottenham, but that does not mean they are relying on one player – or even two – with four of their squad having recorded at least 20 goals and assists this season:

Tottenham's Harry Kane scores their first goalTottenham’s Harry Kane scores their first goal

Harry Kane – 29 goals, 7 assists

Dele Alli – 18 goals, 7 assists

Heung-Min Son – 14 goals, 6 assists

Christian Eriksen – 8 goals, 15 assists

Youngest squad

All of this has been achieved with Pochettino operating with the youngest squad in the division with an average age of just 25 years and seven months. The future is certainly bright in the white half of North London.
