HITC have reported that Tottenham Hotspur have decided on their number one striker target for this summer but he has been criticised for his performances on international duty.

Tottenham Hotspur sold Harry Kane to Bayern Munich last summer and Ange Postecoglou’s side never really replaced the Englishman instead putting the trust in Richarlison and Heung-Min Son, whilst signing Brennan Johnson from Nottingham Forest.

The Lilywhites finished fifth in the Premier League and there were certainly moments of promise for the North London side. They will be hoping to finish in a Champions League place next season.

Sources have told HITC that Spurs’ number one target for the striker role is understood to be Feyenoord’s Santiago Gimenez.

Gimenez criticised for his performances on international duty

Arne Slot, who has taken over from Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer, certainly got the best out of the Mexican forward in the Eredivise last season as he bagged 26 goals in all competitions for the Dutch side.

This has led to interest from Spurs as sources from the North London club believe the Mexican forward could be the ideal signing to bring in, at the relatively affordable price of £42 million.

However, Gimenez has come under fire for his performances on the international stage for Mexico at the Copa America as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Venezuela.

Gimenez’s dad, Christian, who was working as a pundit, was critical of his son’s performance when he spoke to Record.

“On the subject of Santi (Gimenez) , I think he didn’t have a bad game, but he didn’t play a good game either,” Gimenez senior said.

“He had an option that, to be honest, the centre forward of the Mexican National Team has to put it in, even if he is my son, here I am an analyst and I have to say it. A goal chance like this makes the difference between Rondón and Santi today.”

An even more brutal assessment of his performance can be found at Esto, who say the team’s ‘grey’ performance was down to the ‘imprecise’ forward.

Christian Gimenez believes his son requires the confidence of the coach to perform and he would certainly get that at the Lilywhites under Ange Postecoglou.

International performance can’t deter Spurs from signing

One area of the pitch that the North London club struggled in hugely was the goalscoring department with Son being relied upon to score all the goals.

If they brought in Gimenez, who excelled in front of goal last season for Feyenoord, this would certainly take the burden off of the South Korean.

There are other sides from Europe who are interested, like Inter Milan and Atletico Madrid, but Tottenham have to do all they can to sign the poacher irrespective of how his performances for Mexico have been perceived.
