Still, for that kind of money he would surely play week in, week out and make an impact at White Hart Lane.
Not exactly, as we fast-forward a few months to find Sissoko little more than an over-priced substitute.
In fact, the Tottenham player is one of the most expensive subs in the Premier League; a man who has managed just 55 minutes of Premier League football in the last six weeks.
Big-money deals do not always work out, but few players that cost as much as £30million are currently struggling to find their next start in the top flight.
The purchase of Sissoko looks like more of a mistake with each passing week and it is surely only a matter of time before Tottenham admit that, on this occasion, they got it wrong.
