The Tottenham Hotspur youngster has been wearing the armband in Europe this season.
By now in his admittedly fledgling career, Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Marcus Edwards was expected to have made waves with the first-team, but a 15-minute cameo against Gillingham in the EFL Cup is all he has to show for his efforts.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has been open with his plans regarding the talented teenager, believing that this season he would be best served with a prolonged run with Tottenham’s under-23s, but another recent decision could ultimately see him reach another level.
Edwards has been handed the captaincy for Tottenham’s UEFA Youth League campaign and, rather than weighing him down, the added responsibility spurred him on, with two goals in a 4-0 victory against Borussia Dortmund and a goal and an assist in the recent 3-2 victory against Real Madrid.
These are some of the best academy products in world football and Edwards, unsurprisingly given his own reputation, is leading by example and running the show.
The 18-year-old could have easily sulked when he discovered he would not be getting many (or any) chances with Tottenham’s senior side this season. Instead he has taken the armband for the next generation and proved his worth, while also scoring regularly with the under-23s.
This is a sign of a great player in the making, and it is only a matter of time before Tottenham fans finally see what all the fuss is about on a regular basis.
