Tottenham Hotspur were linked with a surprise move for Newcastle United flop Florian Thauvin, but his recent form in France has been sensational.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
When French outlet RMC Sport suggested that Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino was a keen admirer of Florian Thauvin, Spurs fans would have been forgiven for asking serious questions about whether such a move would be a wise decision.
Thauvin endured a miserable time with Newcastle – which is set to come to an end when he joins Marseille permanently this summer (via Chronicle) – and the last wingers Spurs have signed following impressive spells in Ligue 1, Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Clinton N’Jie, have failed to capture the imagination since arriving at White Hart Lane.
However, there is no question that Thauvin’s recent form has been sensational, with his most recent performance justifying exactly why Pochettino is a fan of the 24-year-old.
The former France under-21 international scored a brilliant hat-trick, where he displayed a tremendous amount of class to inspire his side to a 5-1 win over Caen at the weekend.
He scored a thunderous volley from inside the box, demonstrated some wonderful technique to chip the goalkeeper in the second-half and then showed his composure to bring down a cross expertly and dispatch a shot into the bottom corner.

He also contributed an assist in the emphatic win for Marseille, meaning that he has scored eight goals and provided four assists in his last eight appearances.
And with his last three games reaping five goals and two assists, Pochettino’s interest actually seems much more understandable as, if he was able to find anything like that form for Spurs, he would undoubtedly be a sensational signing if Marseille are at all interested in selling him quickly to make a quick profit.
