Tottenham Hotspur have a new star in the making in Harry Winks, but the youngster had a relatively quiet game against West Bromwich Albion on Saturday.
That said, he does not deserve the criticism coming his way, with the 21-year-old always likely to hit a few bumps in the road along the path to becoming a Tottenham great.
Winks really can be that good in time and it will be interesting to see how quickly he shakes off the disappointment of being shackled by West Brom’s own young midfield talent Sam Field.
The issue for Winks is that he benefits from playing against opponents who allow some space for him to showcase his impressive passing range.
West Brom are not that side, and their compact defensive game ensured Winks struggled to make his mark prior to his 61st-minute substitution.
The Tottenham youngster is still one of their best players and has everything in his locker to star for club and country for the next decade, but Saturday’s match could be one to simply write off as a blip on an otherwise impressive fledgling CV.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino will understand that players learn more from their struggles than their successes and he will be hoping Winks uses his latest outing to kick on over the hectic festive fixtures next month.
