Tottenham Hotspur will surely want new signings in January.
Tottenham Hotspur are heading towards January in fine form, and whilst there questions over Mauricio Pochettino’s future amid links to Manchester United, there are more immediate matters to tend to.
After a signing-less summer, Spurs need to try and bolster Pochettino’s squad next month, even with money tight at the club given the cost of their new stadium.
Pochettino may hope for business both in and out, and here are five things he should focus on during next month’s trolley dash for new signings…
1. Sign at least one central midfielder
If there is one area that needs attention at Tottenham, it’s central midfield. Mousa Dembele’s contract expires next summer and Victor Wanyama has slipped off the radar, leaving Pochettino with few options. A star signing like Tanguy Ndombele would be quite incredible, and the Frenchman is virtually the perfect replacement for Dembele, but Lyon will demand huge money for him. At least one addition to bolster the ranks is a must, even if it’s a Wilmar Barrios or Florian Grillitsch.
2. Keep Christian Eriksen
Christian Eriksen’s importance was recently shown with the last-gasp winner against Burnley, just days after turning in a sensational display away at Barcelona. The Dane is being managed carefully this season, but the fact remains that he is integral to this Spurs setup. His contract expires in just 18 months, and Spurs really need to fend off interest in the former Ajax man next month, but also attempt to seal a new contract.
3. Attempt to sign another striker
Harry Kane hasn’t been in his usual sensational form this season, taking on more of a creative role of late with four assists in his last five games. Spurs seemingly always need a striker, but it will be extra important this time around. Son Heung-min will be heading off to the Asian Cup with South Korea, whilst Fernando Llorente is out of contract next summer and looks set to move on; signing a striker to bring along for six months before starring next season, much like Lucas Moura, would be ideal.
4. Offload the dead wood once and for all
Somehow, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Vincent Janssen are both still Tottenham players. It’s no surprise that this news has seemingly slipped through the cracks, summing up their uneventful spells with the club. After two-and-a-half years with the club, neither have made any sort of impact, and offloading them permanently in January should be a priority for Spurs.
5. Make decisions on Dembele, Llorente and Vorm
It has been mentioned here already, but veterans Fernando Llorente and Mousa Dembele – as well as Michel Vorm – are out of contract next summer, and can walk away for free. January is the perfect time to make decisions on whether to keep any of them, and if not, then they can either attempt to sell them or at least line up replacements, rather than let the situations drag on and on.
