The Tottenham Hotspur man has been used in a variety of positions this season.
Tottenham ace Eric Dier spoke to reporters in the aftermath of his side’s hard-fought 1-0 win at Crystal Palace yesterday, and insisted that he enjoyed playing in the centre-back position, whilst admitting that it was bittersweet in light of Jan Vertonghen’s absence, as quoted by the club’s official website.
The 24-year-old has been used as a central midfielder and centre-back throughout the course of his Spurs career, but his manager Mauricio Pochettino has always insisted that he is better suited to play in defence.
The Lilywhites have enjoyed a successful campaign so far this term, and it has only been because of the brilliance of Manchester City that they are not involved in the Premier League title race.
They have not lost a game since December 16th in all competitions, and are firmly on track in both the FA Cup and the Champions League, with Dier playing a pivotal role in their campaign.
The England international spoke to reporters after yesterday win at Selhurst Park, and shared his mixed feelings after excelling in the central defensive role that he played, as quoted by the club’s official website:
“I feel very good playing there (at centre-half). It’s never good having to do that through an injury to such an important player like Jan, he’s been fantastic all season so it’s really disappointing that he got hurt yesterday and hopefully he’s back as soon as possible.”
Dier’s ability to play in a variety of positions has proved to be vital to both his club and country, and it could be argued that that kind of versatility is exactly the attribute that makes him the player he is today.
Next up for Tottenham is their FA Cup replay against Rochdale on Wednesday, and the 24-year-old might have to fill in at the back once again, with Vertonghen a doubt for the clash at Wembley.
