According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino wants to send Marcus Edwards out on loan today in a bid to continue his development, and the teenager’s next move could kick-start his career.

The midfielder has long been tipped for stardom by those Tottenham fans who keep a close eye on the club’s academy, and while injury curtailed his progress last season he did at least make his debut, albeit for just 15 minutes against Gillingham in the EFL Cup.

According to the Mail, Tottenham are trying to send Edwards out on loan because – while Pochettino rates the player – the Spurs boss feels there are some issues in his game that could be alleviated with a spell playing regular first-team football elsewhere.

It is being suggested that a temporary switch to a club in the Championship or lower down the football pyramid could be the ideal short-term solution for the 18-year-old, and if Edwards finds the right team it could be the making of him.

Some Tottenham fans feel the teenager should be kept in North London and blooded in the cup competitions. However the opportunity to play week in, week out should not be understated and, if he hits the ground running, he could develop at such a rate that he would be propelled into Spurs’ senior set-up next season.

Training with Tottenham’s superstars is one thing but ensuring he gets regular game time alongside them is quite another.

A loan spell at a club that commits to nurturing his talent and giving him sufficient minutes is the right move, and from there the sky really is the limit for the crown jewel in Spurs’ academy crown.
