Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to wait on a bid for Ben Chilwell.
Leicester City defender Ben Chilwell could make his England debut against Switzerland tonight – and he is also at the centre of a transfer rumour.
The 21-year-old left back, who has come up through the ranks at the King Power Stadium, has cemented himself as the first-choice left back at Leicester under Claude Puel, beating out Christian Fuchs.
Chilwell’s impressive displays in the early stages of the season have seen him earn an England call-up in place of the injured Luke Shaw, meaning he could earn his first cap tonight.
On Monday, The Telegraph reported that Tottenham Hotspur are keen to land Chilwell as Mauricio Pochettino weighs up a new left back to target, but there was a familiarly disappointing message for Spurs fans in the report.
It’s claimed that whilst Spurs want to lure Chilwell to North London, but they want to wait until next summer to make a move as the left back will be inside the final two years of his contract at the King Power Stadium.
That’s exactly what Tottenham fans didn’t want to hear after their failed pursuit of Aston Villa playmaker Jack Grealish over the summer, as Spurs waited and waited for Villa’s financial situation to deteriorate, but waited so long that they received new investment and could afford to keep Grealish.
Spurs fans don’t want to see their club keep waiting and waiting for their targets; quick, decisive moves to land the players Pochettino wants is what is needed, so another plan to wait and wait halfway into next year for Chilwell seems like an idea destined to end in disappointment.
Leicester have already shown that they will pay up to keep star players at the club, having renewed Harry Maguire’s contract this week, and they will surely now look to extend Chilwell’s deal amid claims that Spurs will be willing to wait rather than give them something to think about as soon as the January transfer window opens.
