The Sporting Lisbon ace is reportedly attracting attention from Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Tottenham are reportedly set for a summer battle with Liverpool for the signature of Sporting Lisbon ace Bruno Fernandes, according to the Mirror, and they would be making a huge statement to the rest of Europe if they win the race for the Portugal international.

Mauricio Pochettino has earned rave reviews for the job that he has done at Spurs, since taking over in May 2014, but his failure to guide his side to a trophy has raised questions regarding his elite status as a manager.

The Argentine will be desperate to bolster his ranks this summer, and the addition of a creative, goalscoring midfielder will surely feature highly on his agenda, in an effort to lighten the burden on Christian Eriksen’s shoulders.

The Mirror claim that Fernandes is a key target for the Lilywhites, but they will face stiff competition from Liverpool for his signature.

The 23-year-old has been in superb form for Sporting this season, chalking up 14 goals and 20 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions, and that kind of output would surely help take Tottenham to the next level.

The main problem for Spurs is that he has a release clause of €100 million (£86.4 million) inserted into his current contract with Sporting, according to the Mirror, and the Portuguese outfit have no interest in selling.

The Lilywhites have an extremely stringent financial structure in place at the club, but the way that the market is heading, they will surely have to break that structure, if they are to make a serious push for glory both domestically and on the continent.

Fernades would be an exceptional signing for Tottenham, and the north London outfit should go all out to make a deal for the Portuguese happen this summer.

By beating the Reds to his signature they would not only be strengthening their own team, but they would also be making a huge statement that they really do mean business.
