Tottenham Hotspur will need to strengthen this summer if they are to challenge for major honours on a regular basis.
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino
Spurs are still interested in signing Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, and are considering making a £20 million bid for the 24-year-old in the summer, according to the Sun.
Mauricio Pochettino is also rumoured to be interested in bringing Monaco wonderkid Kylian Mbappe to White Hart Lane, with the French club putting a £51 million price-tag on the teenager’s head, according to Le Parisien.
And which player Tottenham choose to sign this summer will be a great indication of their ambitions for the future, and will show whether or not they are truly ready to enter the big time, by competing for major honours on a regular basis.
Whilst Zaha is a very good player, with great potential, he isn’t quite at the elite level, and the manner in which he struggled during his time at Manchester United highlighted how he may not have the mental capacity, or the physical attributes needed to become one of the very best in the game.
Mbappe, however, has lit up the world stage after bursting onto the scene at Monaco this season, and has been in electric form for the Ligue 1 outfit.
He has showcased his ability on Europe’s biggest stage in the Champions League, against some of the world’s best teams, including his dynamic display at the Etihad against Manchester City last month.
Monaco’s Kylian Mbappe
The forward’s sensational form for Leonardo Jardim’s men has been underlined by his hugely impressive numbers.
He has scored 15 goals and registered five assists in the 29 games he has played thus far, with just under half of those appearances coming from the substitutes bench.
Zaha meanwhile has scored just five goals along with six assists in 26 games, and is quite clearly not on the same level as the French youngster.
And the route that Pochettino chooses to go down, as far as his player recruitment is concerned, will be very telling as to how far he and the club’s owners want Tottenham to go.
Mbappe would be a huge statement signing, and bringing him to the club would send out a clear message to the rest of European football that Spurs mean business.
Whereas bringing Zaha to White Hart Lane would have the complete opposite effect.
