Back in January, Tottenham surprisingly allowed Dele Alli to join Everton on a free transfer, after a difficult spell for the England international.
Spurs actually allowed the 26-year-old to join the Toffees on a free transfer, although the north Londoners are able to make some money in the form of performance related add-ons.
Now, however, those clauses – worth a potential total of £40m to Spurs – are unlikely to be triggered.
What’s the story?
Well, Dele – as he prefers to go by – could now be joining Besiktas.
According to Sky Sports, the Everton No.20 is in talks to join the Turkish giants, in a deal which would surely frustrate Tottenham if it happened.
Sky Sports add that the move could still be a loan or a permanent deal – the outcome will depends on how talks progress.
Should Dele pack up his bags and move to Turkey on a permanent basis, it will see Tottenham’s hopes of receiving that aforementioned £40m – or even a fraction of it – evaporate.
Spurs even missed out on a small bonus last season. If the Milton Keynes-born midfielder made 20 appearances for the Toffees, Tottenham would’ve received £10m, according to the Daily Mail.
However, Frank Lampard has only given Dele 13 appearances in an Everton shirt so far, and with Besiktas now in talks to sign him, Tottenham might end up seeing none of their add-ons activated.
Tottenham & Everton will be disappointed
Add-ons aside, Tottenham and Everton will surely be upset by how Dele’s career is turning out.
At one point, it seemed as if the Englishman could walk into any side on the planet – he was that good.
Dele scored 18 Premier League goals in the 2016/17 season aged just 21 – outscoring the likes of Eden Hazard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Sadly, for whatever reason, he just hasn’t been able to kick on from that incredible start to his career.
Hopefully, Dele can start to turn things around in the Süper Lig – if the move to Besiktas materialises.
