Tottenham Hotspur want Weston McKennie but the Juventus midfielder didn’t impress for the United States against Wales on Monday.

Group B of the World Cup got underway on Monday afternoon with England hammering Iran 6-2 in Doha.

The attention then turned to USA hosting Wales with both nations looking to grab a win before they have to play against England.

USA took a deserved lead when Christian Pulisic picked out Timothy Weah to slot the opening goal.

Wales did though grab themselves a point and a 1-1 draw with Gareth Bale scoring from the spot late on.

Tottenham target Weston McKennie not at his best

Tottenham fans will have loved seeing their former hero Bale score a goal on the world’s biggest stage.

Yet Spurs supporters may have also had one eye on the performance of USA midfielder Weston McKennie.

Tuttomercatoweb claim that Tottenham want to sign McKennie in January and Juventus are ready to let him leave.

Fabio Paratici signed McKennie for Juventus in 2020 and now fancies reuniting with him at Tottenham.

Amid mixed form in Italy, this was a great chance for McKennie to show his quality for all to see.

However, McKennie – who has been out injured of late – failed to really stamp his authority on this game.

McKennie was booked in the first half, didn’t offer much going forward and was the first player USA substituted in the second half.

The US media weren’t impressed with McKennie, with CBS Sports giving him just a 5/10 rating.

They suggested that McKennie’s passing wasn’t at his best and he wasn’t all that involved going forward.

The18 also gave McKennie a 5/10, criticising his passing whilst agreeing with the decision to substitute him first.

Goal at least gave McKennie a 6/10 rating but suggested that he had ‘little substance’ to go with ‘plenty of bite’.

Maybe McKennie deserves as pass given his comeback from injury but he will have done little to convince Tottenham fans last night.
