Tottenham were interested in £30m ‘Mustang’ who’s now set to join their rivals

Tottenham Hotspur were interested in signing Manchester United defender Harry Maguire.

That is according to a report from The Times.

It states that Tottenham were briefly interested in Harry Maguire before turning to other targets, giving West Ham United a pretty much clear path to his signature.

On Wednesday, BBC Sport reported that West Ham had agreed a £30m deal with United to sign the England international.

While Tottenham will not be bringing in Maguire, they have still managed to strengthen their defence. Ange Postecoglou has added Micky van de Ven to his squad in order to bolster his backline.

Maguire would have surely been delighted if Tottenham had came in for him. The north London outfit did not have the best season last term, but they are still one of the biggest clubs in England.

In recent years, Spurs have been in and around the Champions League places, so they are the kind of side a lot of footballers would probably like to play for.

It is a move that Tottenham legend Jurgen Klinsmann may have backed, with the German having once compared the 30-year-old to a “Mustang”.

A switch to West Ham is hardly a disastrous career move, though. Unlike Spurs, they will actually be playing in Europe this term, while the Hammers also have a very good coach in David Moyes at the helm.

The most important thing for Maguire is that he plays after a really tough campaign at Old Trafford, and that should be the case at West Ham.

All in all, Tottenham will probably not be crying about not signing Maguire. He perhaps needed them more than they needed them.

The Premier League outfit have recruited Van de Ven instead and there is still time for them to add another central defender to their squad if that is what Postecoglou wants.
