Tottenham were reportedly considering a move to sign Watford star Ismaila Sarr in the January window with the player still in the Championship – and Etienne Capoue once said he could be one of the best players in the Premier League.

Sarr, 24, has continued his wonderful Watford form this season with 11 goals and assists in 24 games. He also caught the eye with his performances in Qatar, for Senegal. But the attacker has entered the final 18 months of his contract.

The Athletic report that Tottenham, while on the lookout for a new attacking signing, added Sarr to their January list. But, Spurs did not make a bid or open any talks with Watford – or the player. Clearly, though, Fabio Paratici likes him.

Speaking about his Watford teammate back in 2020, ex-Tottenham midfielder Capoue raved about Sarr. He even claimed the African ace could become one of the best players in the Premier League, having played alongside him.

“I knew about Ismaïla from his time in France. He will be a top player; he can be one of the best in the Premier League,” Sarr said, as per Goal in 2020. “He’s shy as he doesn’t speak English, but with us French speakers he’s really funny.”

Instead, Spurs signed Arnaut Danjuma on a loan-to-buy basis from Villarreal – worth around £27million. Throughout his Watford career, Sarr has attracted interest from a whole host of Premier League clubs. Including deadline day.

The Athletic reported on deadline day that Everton actually made an offer to sign Sarr. A loan deal with an obligation for Sarr, worth a total of £32million. It did not materialise and Sarr, once again, remains at Vicarage Road this season.

Sarr would have been an excellent signing for Spurs, as cover for Son Heung-min. But he is also able to play on the right, and up top – which he has done so for Watford at times this term. Surely, this summer, he will be on the move.
