Tottenham are reportedly one of a number of Premier League clubs considering a summer move to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. A player, Peter Crouch claimed is England’s best option at centre-back.
Gomez, 24, has fallen down the pecking order at Liverpool after he suffered a second anterior cruciate ligament injury at the beginning of the 2020-21 campaign. It has seen him struggle to win back his place this time around.
Just five Premier League appearances have come his way this season, starting just once against Norwich last month. Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are all ahead of the England defender in the rankings.
90Min report that more than half of the Premier League are considering a summer move for Gomez – with Gareth Southgate said to be ‘desperate’ that Liverpool sell him this summer. Tottenham want the £3.5million man (BBC).
They face competition from the likes of Newcastle, West Ham and Leicester. Back in 2020, ex-Liverpool and Tottenham star Crouch said he is England’s best option at centre-back – but of course, this was prior to his ACL injury.
“[Van Dijk] has lifted those around him and it is noticeable how Joe Gomez has benefited from the Dutchman’s presence,” Crouch wrote in the Daily Mail, in 2020. “Gomez is now England’s best defender.”
Crouch on Gomez: Why Liverpool star is perfect for Tottenham
Gomez is perfect for Tottenham – and more notably, Antonio Conte’s Tottenham. That is because of his defensive versatility. He can play at right-back and left-back, meaning he can play on either side of Conte’s defence.
He can cover Cristian Romero and even overtake the Copa America winner. With Joe Rodon potentially leaving this summer, he can replace the Welshman as back-up to Eric Dier. But on the left, he would start.
Ben Davies is consistent, and a solid option. But he rarely produces better than a 7/10. Gomez would give Tottenham and Conte a superb option on the left, but cover on the right and the middle. The ideal defensive signing.
