Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Sunderland’s Jordan Pickford, but they should be pursuing AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma instead.
According to The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs interested in signing Jordan Pickford from Sunderland in the summer transfer window.
Manchester City, Arsenal and Everton are also reported to be monitoring the 23-year-old, and one can understand why. Pickford is playing well for the Black Cats at the moment and has proved that he can be a success in the Premier League.
If Sunderland do get relegated to the Championship at the end of the season, then it would be hard for the Black Cats to keep hold of Pickford. Signing the Englishman would be a good move for Tottenham.
Hugo Lloris is Spurs’ first-choice goalkeeper at the moment and he should remain so for a few more years. The Frenchman is world class, but Pickford could push him hard.
However, there is another young and talented goalkeeper that Tottenham should be looking at. Gianluigi Donnarumma is only 18 years of age, but he has already established himself as the first choice between the posts for AC Milan and is a full Italy international.
Milan president Silvio Berlusconi has been quoted as saying by ESPN that Donnarumma is not for sale, but given the Rossoneri’s current financial situation and instability, Spurs could tempt them with a good transfer fee.
The North London outfit could also offer the youngster a good wage and convince him that he would be given chances to fight for a place in the starting lineup.
Donnarumma has been playing first-team football since he was 16, and he is destined to be a superstar. If Tottenham want to look at life beyond Lloris and want to establish themselves among Europe’s elite in the coming years, then they should be targeting talented and promising players such as Donnarumma.
