Antonio Conte’s Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Illan Meslier from Jesse Marsch’s Leeds United, according to The Athletic journalist Phil Hay on his podcast.

Tottenham Hotspur linked with Leeds United goalkeeper Illan Meslier

The well-known and well-respected journalist has reported that Tottenham are one of the clubs who are keen on French goalkeeper Meslier.

Tottenham are reportedly already planning for a long-term replacement for Hugo Lloris and have identified his French compatriot Meslier as a target.

Hay said on his podcast, as transcribed by CaughtOffSide: “It’s quite interesting that Spurs are one of the clubs looking at him as Lloris is getting into his mid-30s now and he is out of contract in 2024 and you would assume that Tottenham would now be looking at a succession plan for him.

“Pretty eventful time for Meslier but this season he has looked better than he ever has and has been a top-class goalkeeper.”

Hay has further reported in The Athletic that ‘Tottenham are as interested in Meslier as anyone’ as a potential successor to Lloris.

Interestingly, it was Hay who said on his podcast in August that “there is loads and loads of interest in Meslier”, adding that “Tottenham are a side who are particularly interested in Meslier”.

Could a transfer happen?

In our view, Tottenham Hotspur could be able to sign Illan Meslier from Leeds United, but not until next summer.

There is no way that Leeds will sell their number one goalkeeper in the middle of the season.

Meslier is 22 now, and if he has yet another great season in the Premier League, then Leeds will be able to ask for a lot in transfer fees for him.

The Frenchman is one of the best young goalkeepers around, with Arsenal and France legend Patrick Vieira, now the manager of Crystal Palace, telling Football.London in April 2022 that he has “a lot of potential”.
