Tottenham are among a number of clubs targeting Roma attacker Henrikh Mkhitaryan on a free – a player Pochettino commented on 2016. He said that Mkhitaryan is good enough to play for Barcelona or Real Madrid.
Mkhitaryan, 33, is out of contract this summer at Roma. He has spent the last three years at the Stadio Olimpico, initially joining Jose Mourinho’s side in 2019. He has played 116 games, clocking up 57 goal involvements.
But the Armenia international is out of contract this summer, and journalist Alfredo Pedulla claims Tottenham are considering a move. A surprise move, given he is an ex-Arsenal player, and he is well into his thirties.
Speaking about Mkhitaryan ahead of a Champions League clash between Tottenham and Dortmund, then-Spurs manager Pochettino was full of praise. He said Mkhitaryan could play for Real Madrid and Barcelona.
“The strikers they have – Aubameyang, Mkhitaryan, Gundogan in midfield, Hummels – they’re internationals and big players. They can stay here or go to Real Madrid or Barcelona,” Pochettino said, as per ArmenPress.
Pochettino 2016 comments on Tottenham target Mkhitaryan
Would Mkhitaryan be a good signing for Tottenham? He would be good cover, but perhaps, expensive cover. Mkhitaryan is likely to be on big wages at Roma, and at 33, are Spurs really looking to bring in cover such as that?
They already have Lucas Moura and Steven Bergwijn, and if the latter does go, Mkhitaryan might make sense. That is only, if Spurs can get him to reduce his wages in the coming weeks – and if is happy to be cover.
