Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Ernesto Valverde, and Lionel Messi’s previous comments on the former Barcelona head coach will encourage the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium faithful.
What’s the story?
Fabrizio Romano has claimed on Twitter that Tottenham are now interested in appointing Valverde as their new manager.
The well-known and well-respected journalist has claimed that Spurs have approached the 57-year-old Spaniard.
Lionel Messi’s praise
Valverde has been without a managerial job since January 2020 when he was sacked by Barcelona.
Following the decision, Barca forward Messi posted the following message on Instagram.
When translated from Spanish, the message reads: “Thanks for everything, mister. You are sure to do great wherever you go because, in addition to being a great professional, you are a wonderful person. Good luck and a big hug.”
Encouraging for Tottenham Hotspur fans
As we can see from Messi’s post, the Argentina international is a massive fan of Valverde.
Messi clearly enjoyed working with the 57-year-old, and that says a lot about the now out-of-work manager.
Yes, Valverde could not really make a huge impact in the Champions League with Barcelona.

But, the 57-year-old did win the La Liga twice and the Copa del Rey once with Barcelona.
The former Athletic Bilbao boss is without a managerial role at the moment.
This means that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will not have to pay a compensation fee.
Appointing Valverde as the new manager may not be a bad idea for Tottenham.
