Tottenham Hotspur take on Manchester City in the late kick-off on Saturday, and the club’s Twitter account reminded fans of some cracking strikes in the fixture ahead of the match.
With Tottenham Hotspur set to face Manchester City at the Etihad in a crucial Premier League clash this weekend, it is no wonder many are looking back at previous matches between the two clubs for sensational strikes.
For a long time, Spurs got the better of the Citizens in the Premier League, but as City became title challengers, they put the Lilywhites to the sword on more than one occasion with devastating effect – something that changed last season, as Tottenham won both league games.
The Spurs Twitter account released a video containing four favourite strikes that have occurred in the fixture, and there was a common theme among the four goals – each was a winning goal for the North Londoners.
The first goal on the list was a stunning 2004 strike from the left from Freddie Kanoute, with the striker lashing an effort into the top corner back when City were merely looking to consolidate their Premier League position, having returned to the top flight from lower league football only a few years earlier. To underline just how long ago this 1-0 win was, Joey Barton was a fresh faced and talented midfielder for the home team and Michael Carrick was catching the eye as a playmaker for Spurs.
Tom Huddlestone – Tottenham Hotspur celebrates his goal for 0-2
Tom Huddlestone’s memorable first half half-volley in 2006 saw the North Londoners rush into a 2-0 lead after the midfielder had set up Calum Davenport’s opener from a free-kick. Joey Barton scored a second half goal, but the home side couldn’t find an equaliser, meaning the now-Hull man’s strike – his first Premier League goal – was the decider.
Peter Crouch’s 2010 goal was perhaps the most noteworthy of the four, as he nodded in Younes Kaboul’s cross to give Spurs the 1-0 win late on that they needed to secure Champions League football for the first time in their history, at the expense of a City team boosted by Abu Dhabi Group and pushing hard for progress. That progress would come soon enough, City finished top four the next season and won the league the year after.

The last goal should be a little easier to remember, as last season’s impressive 2-1 winner from Christian Eriksen, following superb work from Erik Lamela, gave Tottenham their first victory at the Etihad since City had won the league in 2012. It signified that Pochettino’s side were genuine challengers for the Premier League title, a mantle that hasn’t gone away this season.
It is clear that Tottenham, from the players to the Twitter team to the supporters, will be hoping for another winning goal come Saturday night, and after they dispatched Manchester City so impressively at White Hart Lane earlier in the season, you wouldn’t bet against it.
