Tim Sherwood has praised the impact Tottenham Hotspur transfer target and former Wolves man Morgan Gibbs-White has had at Nottingham Forest after they avoided relegation from the Premier League.
On Sunday, Morgan Gibbs-White helped Steve Cooper’s Forest record a valuable 1-0 win over Arsenal, which ensured their Premier League safety.
The England U21 star joined for big money from Wolves, but former Tottenham boss Sherwood thinks the all-action midfielder has a likeness to Jack Grealish and his former club will be surprised by how good he has become, as he told Premier League Productions (22/05/23 at 5:20 pm).
What is Wolves’ loss is now Forest’s gain because Gibbs-White has been a key reason behind them staying up.
Over the course of the season, the 23-year-old has scored five goals and supplied seven assists, which is pretty impressive for a player that was part of a team that brought in so many signings in the summer.
Either way, the former Sheffield United loanee’s stock is rising and, according to Sherwood, if he continues down this current road, then the ‘£40 million’ Forest paid for his talents will prove to be ‘cheap’.
“He has been outstanding,” said Sherwood. “This boy has come from Wolves. They have had a big influx of foreign players, mainly Portuguese players who have come into that group. He should still be there, in my opinion.
“I think the Wolves fans will be looking at this and thinking ‘wow, how could this boy be so good for someone else’. He has brought into it.
“He has realised that Steve Cooper, someone he knew from the underage England groups, has put his arm around him. He has made him the main man and he is repaid him. He has been brilliant the kid. He works hard out of possession.
“He takes the pressure off the defenders. He takes the ball. A bit like Grealish when he takes the pressure off. Buys some fouls and takes you up the field. But real quality – Forest have got to be commended for taking him there. £40 million seemed a lot of money, but I think by the time next season comes, and if they stay in the Premier League again and he keeps getting shone in the correct light, then I think he will be a cheap signing.”
TOTTENHAM’S TRANSFER INTEREST IN GIBBS-WHITE
Tottenham might not have a manager or sporting director in charge, but that hasn’t stopped the transfer rumour mill from suggesting that they are keen on Gibbs-White.
It’s understandable because Spurs’ midfield lacks that bite, attacking intent and ball-carrying ability, especially with Rodrigo Bentancur out for the long term.
But given the money Forest paid for the Englishman, then Spurs would have to easily go above £50 million to sign him, and given that this is Daniel Levy, then that isn’t happening.
