Southampton defender Kyle Walker-Peters impressed Chris Sutton as the Saints stunned Manchester City on Wednesday night. He is also a transfer target for Tottenham Hotspur.
Boss Nathan Jones pulled off a Carabao Cup shock at St Mary’s to eliminate the Citizens 2-0 in the quarter-finals. Sekou Mara (23’) broke the deadlock for the south coast team before Moussa Djenepo (28’) doubled their margin. They will meet Newcastle United in the semis.
Pep Guardiola had initially rested Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland ahead of Saturday’s derby at Manchester United. Yet neither superstar’s half-time introduction would prevent Southampton from beating Manchester City as Jones’ side stood firm to secure a huge win.
Walker-Peters featured for the full 90 minutes at left-back, matched up against Phil Foden, Cole Palmer and Joao Cancelo. The 25-year-old also had to help try to stop De Bruyne from inspiring a comeback after the break. It was the Spurs product’s 17th outing of the season.
The two-cap England international had featured on the right against Lincoln City in the EFL Cup fourth round. He has also featured 14 times, starting each, in the Premier League this term. Walker-Peters’ top-flight minutes have also been split between right- and left-back.
Walker-Peters impresses Sutton as Tottenham eye the Southampton star’s transfer
Tottenham appreciate what Walker-Peters is offering Southampton to earn interest from Premier League rivals in a transfer. Spurs are keeping an eye on the £50k-a-week dynamo’s situation as Manchester United and Chelsea head the teams eying a swoop, per talkSPORT.
Walker-Peters is also pushing to leave St Mary’s after talks over a new contract stalled. The London-born defender’s existing deal runs to June 2025. But he has not penned a new deal since leaving Tottenham for Southampton in August 2020 for an initial £12m plus add-ons.
Tottenham also secured a £30m buy-back clause in the terms of Walker-Peters’ transfer to Southampton, per The Athletic. He could now solve Antonio Conte’s wish for a new option in the right-back position having impressed Sutton as the Saints stunned Manchester City.
“Great driving run by Kyle Walker-Peters,” Sutton noted on BBC Radio 5 Live. “Nathan Ake kept up with him but Walker-Peters was patient enough to hold the ball up. He plays a give and go, whips it in but Adam Armstrong just can’t get enough on it.”
