Tottenham have reportedly made an opening bid to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Piero Hincapie, with Spurs looking to beat Arsenal to the Ecuadorian centre-back.

According to Bild, Antonio Conte’s side have made a €25m (£20m) verbal bid to sign the 21-year-old South American, with Tottenham being heavily linked with Hincapie since the 2022 FIFA World Cup, where the versatile defender impressed.

As per the report, though, Leverkusen are in a strong position to keep hold of Hincapie with the defender flourishing under Xavi Alonso and the German club experiencing a great run of form under the former Real Sociedad coach, with Tottenham’s bid expected to be turned down.

Lauded as ‘tremendous’ by Bundesliga expert Kevin Hatchard, Tottenham are not the only Premier League club chasing Hincapie this January, with CalcioMercato reporting last month that Arsenal are also interested in signing the Leverkusen wonderkid.

However, with Arsenal signing Spezia defender Jakub Kiwior earlier in the window, the Premier League leaders are now seemingly sorted in the centre-back department, giving Tottenham a free shot at landing Hincapie in the final days of the January market.

Indeed, with Tottenham in need of a young defender who play numerous positions, Hincapie could be a great option for Conte’s side, with the Italian manager also the perfect figure to take the Ecuadorian’s game to the next level having impressed in the Bundesliga.

Conte has been backed this January with Arnaut Danjuma being signed and Pedro Porro closely following, and with Hincapie potentially joining the fold, Tottenham have spent well this month, with the 21-year-old arguably the most exciting signing for the bunch.

Versatile, young and internationally experienced, Hincapie has the potential to be a great signing in the long-term for Tottenham, and with Spurs now making an offer for the defender, the north London side could soon be in a position to bring the prospect to England.
