Tottenham have reportedly rejected a loan offer from Brentford to sign Djed Spence, with the north London side turning down the bid due to an obligation-to-buy clause proposed by the Bees.

According to the Evening Standard, Spurs have shot down an approach from their Premier League rivals for Spence on loan based on a clause that will see Brentford sign the England youth international permanently come to the end of the season.

Spence signed for Tottenham this summer from Middlesbrough in a £20m transfer that was, at the time, hailed as one of the best of the window. However, the right-back has failed to make any sort of impact under Antonio Conte, with the youngster making just six substitute appearances in all competitions.

With Tottenham pushing hard to sign Pedro Porro from Sporting Lisbon, there is an expectation that Spence will leave north London on loan, and Brentford have now come in with an offer. However, Spurs are seemingly unwilling to let go of their defender on a permanent basis.

Even with Spence hardly playing this season and Tottenham working around the clock to sign Porro, Conte seemingly has long-term plans for the former Championship star. However, as we know already, there is every chance that the defender ends up as a bench warmer for the remainder of the season.

Indeed, Brentford have proven to be one of the best clubs in the Premier League for any young player to join given how much trust Frank puts in talents with the potential to become stars. And for Spence, he will be rightly fuming that this loan offer has been rejected by Tottenham.

It might be a stretch to say that Spence’s time in north London has been a nightmare, but it’s hard to find a word that doesn’t describe it any better. And with Tottenham now rejecting a loan offer from Brentford, the defender will be fearing for his career.

As we know, Spence has the quality and the potential to play at a Premier League level, and a club like Brentford would have been perfect for the England youth international. Though Tottenham’s decision to reject a loan bid from the Bees, even with the obligation to buy clause, is questionable, to say the least.
