Signs are reportedly not looking promising in Brentford’s hopes of pinning star goalkeeper David Raya down to a new contract amid interest from Tottenham.

According to the Athletic, talks are yet to even take place between the Spanish international and the Bees over signing a new contract, with Raya’s deal at Brentford set to expire in 18 months amid reports from the Telegraph that Tottenham are interested in the 27-year-old.

As per the report, Raya is one of numerous Brentford player who is yet to sign a new long-term contract with the club. And as a result, Tottenham could soon find themselves in the clear to bring the shot-stopper to north London at a bargain price.

Raya has been identified by Tottenham as a potential long-term successor to Hugo Lloris, who at 36 is very much coming towards the end of his career in the Premier League, with Antonio Conte and his team already looking ahead to replacing the recently-retired French international.

Indeed, Raya’s contract situation gives Spurs a significant advantage in the transfer war room with Brentford, as the keeper heading into the final year of his deal means that Tottenham holds most of the power when it comes to agreeing on a transfer fee.

Given just how important a task replacing Lloris is for Tottenham, signing Raya could now be a walk in the park with Brentford yet to even open talks over a new contract for their star keeper, which could be a made in the summer very easy to conclude.

Tottenham’s need for a successor to Lloris is arguably one of the most important squad issues facing Conte this week. However, following this latest update, Spurs might now have a free pass at bringing Raya to north London, with the Spaniard ideal to replace the veteran Frenchman.

After all, Raya is a modern goalkeeper who can play with his feet and has shown exceptional shot-stopping abilities during his time as a Premier League player. And with the Spaniard not in talks with Brentford yet over a new contract, Tottenham have a golden chance to bring the 27-year-old across the capital.
