The Athletic report that Real Madrid compiled reports on new Tottenham man Pedro Porro in the January window – a player that Spurs were hell-bent on signing and finally got done within the final 10 minutes, ahead of the deadline.

Porro, 23, was keen on a move to Tottenham throughout the month. But the issue Spurs had with Sporting, was that Sporting wanted a release clause paid. Spurs wanted to do the deal in instalments. It got done, in the final minutes.

In the end, Sporting needed Spurs’ permanent fee to show up on their records for next season. So, a loan fee and then an obligation will see Spurs pay a fee in the region of £40million – come the summer. His deal is until 2028.

But it appears Spurs were not alone. The Athletic report that Chelsea were also keen on Porro – before choosing to sign Malo Gusto from Lyon, a move that sees Gusto remain at Lyon on loan. Real Madrid were also interested in him.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side even compiled reports on Porro. However, Spurs were the most-interested in a move for Porro and finally, wielded their power and negotiation skills to get a deal done. Djed Spence and Matt Doherty have left.

Spurs is a better move for Porro. That is because he comes to North London and is easily the club’s best option on the right. He fills a spot in the side that has been deemed a weak link, with Emerson Royal recently the first choice.

A move to Madrid will have obviously appealed to Porro. A Spain international. But, he would have joined a club that still have Dani Carvajal is first choice. He would have been a rotational option at Madrid, but the main man at Spurs.
