Inter Milan CEO Beppe Marotta has formally announced that the club are in talks to sign Hakan Calhanoglu to a new contract, with Tottenham reportedly interested in the Turkish international.

Speaking to the press via Fabrizio Romano, the Serie A official revealed that work is being done behind the scenes to extend the playmaker’s current deal at Inter, with transfer interest building over the January transfer window for Calhanoglu.

CalcioMercatoWeb reported that Tottenham were interested in Calhanoglu, alongside Manchester United, with Inter valuing the attacking midfielder at €30m (£27m). And a summer move was being touted by Antonio Conte’s side for the former AC Milan superstar.

However, Inter are now making moves to sign Calhanoglu to a new contract that would all-but stop Tottenham in their tracks to sign the 29-year-old, with Spurs keen to add a creative midfielder who can operate as an attacker to their playing squad.

Indeed, Calhanoglu would have been an ideal addition for Tottenham given his age and profile, yet with Inter moving fast to tie the playmaker up to a new deal, the north London side might have now missed the boat to bring the German-born superstar to the Premier League.

Calhanoglu has been one of the best midfielders in Serie A over the last six years, and with the Premier League an obvious next step for the playmaker, Tottenham would have ticked a lot of boxes for both the north London side and the Turkish international.

However, Calhanoglu signing a new deal with Inter will essentially rule out the chance of the playmaker moving to England, with Tottenham now having to look for another target who could offer what the former Bundesliga star would bring to Conte’s side.
