Fabrizio Romano has reported on Twitter that Sporting Lisbon defender Pedro Porro is at the top of Tottenham Hotspur’s January list of transfer targets – and the Spanish right-back is keen on a move to Antonio Conte’s side.

One-time Spain international Porro, 23, joined Sporting on a permanent basis in the summer. It comes after two years on loan at Sporting before his permanent deal, from Manchester City. He has been excellent for Sporting.

Coming into his third year at Sporting, he had nine goals and nine assists in 72 appearances. Under Ruben Amorim this season, Porro has gone up a level. Playing 21 times in all competitions, he has scored two, and created 10.

Spurs have been linked with a move, who impressed in both Champions League ties against Tottenham. Romano gives an update. He says Porro is a priority, he wants a move – but Spurs will need to pay his £40m release clause.

If Tottenham do anything this month, they have got to solve their issues at right wing-back. Emerson Royal is not good enough for this Spurs side – or a Conte team. Matt Doherty is a good player, but a good squad player.

So, selling Brazil international Royal and replacing him with a top wing-back is key. Porro is certainly that. One of the most in-form players in Europe in his position right now, it would be a stunning bit of business to lure him to Spurs.

Clubs are allowed to register three new players for the next stages of the Champions League. Even if, they have previously played in the competition for another side – meaning Porro would be allowed to feature for Tottenham.

While £40million is steep, it is worth it. Porro is incredible going forward, quick enough to get back and has been playing in a side that plays with three at the back. It is a no-brainer for Tottenham in the next few weeks.
